Dougnuts

Did you know it''s been almost a year since my last post?? Did you care? Didn't think so.....but here we are....I suppose everything's been relatively ok up to now, or just couldn’t bother writing about it, but the other night we went to Burlington for the ribfest (Biggest one in Canada....apparently), saw the Downchild Blues band (excellent, as usual), ate some ribs and drank some (overpriced) coolers....I ean, you figure, ribs for 2 with beans and 'slaw (and we're talking side ribs, not even back ribs), the above mentioned coolers and one corn on the cob and we're nearly $70 in the hole......that seems to be the biggest complaint I hear from people who don't go to these ribfests is how expensive they can be...add a couple of kids to the picture and with a few souvenirs, you're looking to double that figure.........and yet, from the looks of the crowds there doesn't seem to be any shortage of people willing to shell out the bucks.......I did notice that the price was up a bit this year, very subtley (is that a word?) in that last year for $22 you got the ribs, beans and slaw and this year, for $22 you got the ribs and you could add the beans and slaw for another toonie.......what can you do? But that's not what prompted me to write......on the way home, we stopped at the local Timmie's for some hot beverages of choice.......my tea is relatively simple, tea bags, hot water, cream.......they usually don't screw it up (but I do have stories about that!) but the other half (ball & chain) wanted the cafe mocha.....the girl behind the counter first started punching in the ice cap, I corrected her...she then punched in the cafe mocha and asked me (the customer) what's in it.......she had no idea how to make this! YIKES! But what really needs addressing is this: How many of us (Canadians, especially) can remember, back in the day, when you would go to the local Country Style (Tim Horton's wasn't as populous back then) at say, 1 or 2 in the morning and grab some hot beverages and a dozen doughnuts and the doughnuts would be relatively fresh and edible...now.......at this Tim's (and pretty much any other Tim's I've been to in the late evening) at 11:30 in the evening, I counted 16 doughnuts in the display and none of them looked anywhere near fresh.......we ordered the one last sour cream glazed and one of the 2 dutchies.....the sour cream glazed had to be pried off of the parchment paper and the dutchie would've been better suited for sanding some woodworking.....so what can you do, right?? Join me in addressing Tim's, let them know we want late night doughnuts ( go to their website and look the contact us link....apparently can't post it here) that are fresh-like.......it's a Canadian thing.........ok?

Who knew they could read in Cleveland.......

Written By Regina Brett, 90 years old, of the local newspaper "The Plain Dealer", Cleveland , Ohio

"To celebrate growing older, I once wrote out the lessons life taught me. It is the most-requested column I've ever written."

My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:

Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

When in doubt, just take the next small step.

Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch.

Pay off your credit cards every month.

You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.

Save for retirement starting with your first pay cheque.

When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.

It's OK to let your children see you cry.

Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.

Everything can change in the blink of an eye.

Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.

Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.

Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.

It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else.

When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.

Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.

Over prepare, then go with the flow.Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.

The most important sex organ is the brain.

No one is in charge of your happiness but you.

Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In five years, will this matter?

Forgive everyone everything.

What other people think of you is none of your business.

Time heals almost everything. Give time time.

However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

Believe in miracles.

Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now. Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young.

Your children get only one childhood.

All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.

Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.

If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.

Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

The best is yet to come.

No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

Yield.

Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift..."

october 18th....Keno update.........Lottery folks = $42 Me = $35 Catching up after going winless for two weeks........you'd think it was the leafs, but caught a double win on last night's draw for $14......let's parlay!!! ok, now get back to work..........

Does the woman from those mattress commercials sleep around?

So finally, mid-month (almost) and the keno ticket hit for $7...woo hoo.....the score right now is Lotto people= $30 Me= $7........now let's see if we can get a parlay (almost sounds french, huh?) going.

Are you liking this weather?? Frost warnings, chance of snow......I KNOW it's coming, this is just the appetizer to the main course, could be worse, we could be in Calgary who got dumped on last week.........better them than us!

Went to the 'other side' on wednesday....no, not playing for the other team, cross-border shopping.....say what you will about buying locally and keeping the money here, you just cannot get Name-Brand Denim shorts for $2 here.......but you can at K-mart......and not just a 15 minute special at the blue light (Attention K-mart shoppers....how old do you have to be to remember THAT???) And Name-Brand (ok, Rockford) shoes for $15, was $59 at the Athlete's Foot or whatever that store was called......only disappointment was TOPS grocery store (Tops never stops...saving you more!) They've opened a newer Walmart closer to all the other shopping on Military trail, and it's one of those new SUPER STORES! So we checked out the grocery section, but we would always go to TOPS for groceries, cause they were cheaper, but we figured on price comparisons......saw the Baby Rays BBQ sauce (excellent stuff) at WalMart 2 for $3 (18 oz bottles), a few other things..........went to to TOPS, the Baby Rays were $2.50 each and most everything else we looked at was 50 cents to a dollar more..........Sorry TOPS, but you've almost become like Metro here......anybody else feel like you need a bank loan to shop at Metro?? And ironically, there is a bank at the front of TOPS offering loans..........go figure.........

This is the true story of a Garage Owner in the Southwest. ( New Mexico )
He was sick and tired of thugs breaking into his garage shop to steal tools, etc. So he came up with this idea. He put the word out that he had a new Mexican Lion that would attack anyone that would break in or climb his fence. Would-be thieves saw the "Lion" from a distance and fled the scene.

A lottery unlike anything else seen before

Ok, so what happened?? Back in march, they announced that the Super 7 lottery will be retired and replaced with a new lottery like nothing we've seen before!! So how do you replace a loottery that you need to pick 7 out of 47 numbers........with a lottery that you need to pick 7 out of 49 numbers, making it even harder to win....and crappier payoffs, too.......I don't know about you but I don't know anyone who ever scored more than 4 numbers on Super 7...no wait, i'm lying, someone I know got 5 numbers and raked in a whopping $105 (retirement plans to follow) but at 4 numbers you got ten bucks, a 5 to 1 return, nothing to write home about, but hey, it paid for breakfast at the local grill on saturday morn.....NOW, with Lotto Max, you pay $5 for a return on 4 numbers of $20, 4 to 1 odds.......and I see on the first draw last week that 5 numbers paid.....uh.........$113.70. Damned near the same pay out at 2 & 1/2 times the cost Sorry Lottery people.........I rarely played the old Super 7 because of the crappy payouts.......won't be touching this one at all!

But hey, let's try something and see if the lottery people can pay for a vacation or something......starting Oct 1, playing 2 sets of 2 numbers on Keno (if they both come in, I've got $14 dollars...woo hoo!) at $1, so a $2 bet.........if one or both wins, i rebet at $2 per set, then $3 and so on.......if not, back to $1 bets...let's see if we can get a roll going........so far, day 2, lost first bet, still at $1, so $4 down........keep you posted...........also feel free to check out these ads on the side and/or under/above this!
